Heck Ya I’m Thankful!

Ξ November 28th, 2007 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

So I know this post is late, time has come and gone from Thanksgiving. We were so darned busy though, I needed a bit of time to recuperate! So now I am posting my Thankful post, and believe me. I am truly thankful!

I am thankful for this man….

Because he is utterly himself and wonderful.  He listens and watches, and learns and loves me. He is a strong man who appreciates his faith, family and work.

I am thankful for this child….

That she smiles and laughs, because she communicates so well, that she has a great support system of people who will drop anything to be with her, that she says the most wonderfully cute things!

and this child…..

because she has come such a far way in a little time.  That she also has so many people who love and care for her, that she is so active and excited to try new things all of the time!

I am thankful for all of my family and the happiness that they bring us.  I love being able to live near our families.

I am thankful that we had four, yep, count em 4! Thanksgiving dinners. All with important people in our lives. We saw God through all of the people we visited through Thanksgiving!

I am super thankful for the health that my family and our friends have!

I am so thankful for so many things. God has truly provided for us, and continues to awe us in directions our lives are taking.

Technet Edge

Ξ November 17th, 2007 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Computer Stuff |

Yes kiddies, it’s another tech post!

If you’re just getting to know me, understand that I’m all about community and technology. Technology influences our lives in ways we both acknowledge and don’t. Microsoft plays a huge role in this. There is so much stuff coming out of that one company it sometimes makes me sick thinking about all the stuff I have to learn.

After coming to the realization that I can’t learn everything in IT, I listened to my inner urge of wanting to help people learn how technology can improve lives and business. Here is where the sense of community comes in.

Edge_thumbI thrive on blogs and the entire tech community that not only built the Internet, but pushes technology forward. Even bigger, how do we educate not only users but other professionals that use different aspects or disciplines of technology? There is plenty of stuff that I’m interested in, but would love to have a central place where I can aggregate that content and be among friends, colleagues and other professionals that are interested in Microsoft technology. For awhile that place was Channel9 but was more geared to developers and not IT guys like me.

Spawned from the same mind that created Channel8, Channel9, and Channel10 - Jeff Sandquist has done a great job in engaging and creating a sense of community in the technology industry.

Welcome Technet Edge!

ZuneScreenshot1 The title says it all. I am referring to the new Zune software that was released earlier this week. Here is the low down.

Microsoft has always had a hard time doing the "creative" thing. This was Apple’s job and they did it well. Microsoft came from business software, and so when I saw the first release of the Zune software it pretty much looked like Windows Media Player, and had that MS touch to the design. Not so with Zune 2 software.

It’s like they contracted out the work to a separate design company, or what is ZuneScreenshot3probably the case, threw the UI design rules out the window. Microsoft’s biggest advantage was a consistent design. But for consumer software like Zune it was a big draw back…at least for me.

They started from scratch and you can tell.

Nothing is really blocky, very smooth with nice designs in the background. Not just a solid color previously. Lots of animation when switching between sections and one of the cooler visualizations when playing music. It shows you all the album art in your collection!

ZuneScreenshot2Matt Singley has a pretty good overview of the software. Long Zheng has a good explanation of some of the technical details of the design too. Overall, when I compare it to iTunes now Zune just smokes it. Add in wireless syncing and podcasting built-in, and you have an awesome platform.

I really do look forward though to what Apple has to come up with next. Competition is a good thing, but I do have one question to ask: How many people will switch from iPod’s to Zunes? Are you willing to give it a try? Tell me why or why not!

I was laid off!

Some of my viewers know, some of you don’t. My company is downsizing and eliminated my position. This happened last week and was a rather shock to me as I thought we were doing pretty well. I do understand the reasoning’s though: There is a difference between billing a client and clients sending payment.

Again, at first it was a shock but after awhile I started to think this is an opportunity. God asks us not to worry, but to put trust in Him, and as much as I struggle with this I did exactly that.

Relief came when my boss found me a position at another company. Not too sure how many employers do this, but I was grateful. Took a lot of stress off my back. I am still technically employed with ABTech, but more as a contractor that is on call.

My new job is a System Administrator position at Pain Relief Specialist NW, a rather large pain management clinic located in the heart of Gresham. It boasts 2 doctors, 4 other providers and about a staff of 40 to back them up. The IT needs are great, but I’m sure if I apply the same doctrine that I use at Sunset their needs will be on the decline.

Just giving people an update! Some prayer would be in order, if you could keep my family and I on the list, it would be much appreciated! You never know during these turbulent times.

My dear Sweet Phone

IS ALL BETTER! woohoo. Amazing, since it did sit in the water all night, and it was ON when it went into the water.  The following day after drying it out, it was still dripping. So *we*  meaning Mike, decided to cook it. Yep. Cooked. In the oven. It was awesome. It dried right out, and we put the screen cover back on ( it had come off due to the water getting rid of the glue sticky) while it was still hot so that the glue even worked again!  The only issue was the battery. It was bulging. I didn’t think that it would be very safe to use that battery and the cover wouldn’t even fit over it anymore. So, I went and bought a new extended battery from Verizon. The guy who helped me took one look at my phone and said " I think you need a new phone, you know it’s WATER damaged dont you?"   HAHAHA. I started laughing. I think he thought I was completely nuts. Then I let him know, yep, I totally know it’s water damaged. It took a bath, but now its all ok, and it still works so I just need a new battery.  He couldn’t believe that we baked the phone. He said next time rice in a baggie completely covering the phone for 24 hours will do the trick. The rice draws out all of the water? Sweet.  Maybe I will try that next time too.  Next time, yep thats what I said. I fully believe that it will probably happen again at some point. That’s just how the cookie crumbles.

Michael’s Guide to Upbringing of Children

There are so many different "ways" to child rearing, that I thought I would show you how I approach it.

Enjoy!

This week was supposed to be better….

Ξ November 5th, 2007 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

The title says it. This week was supposed to be so good. That’s the rules right? I mean.. if your previous week was really stress filled and crazy and a lot of bad things happened, then this week its supposed to be all cheery and happy and things are supposed to start going right. HA.
Not so.
I think I’m in for another week. This morning Mike walks in after heading to his car for work. Here is how our conversation went… ” Mel.. is there a reason that your phone was sitting in this cup of water in my car?”
I turned to him and said “you have GOT to be kidding me.” sadly, no, he wasnt kidding. ” UGH darn. Man. UGH. I CANT BELIEVE THIS”. Yeah. ok. so, I am little bit angry at myself. But, I can handle this. So I turned to google and researched what others have done to revive cell phones that have sat in water all night. Hrm. Doesn’t sound way too promising, but I will try it. Doused it in isopropyl alcohol. Wiped it down really well, brought out the hairdryer to blow dry it a bit, but not to hot so it wouldnt fry the connecting parts. Ugh. I dont think it will work, but I guess I will wait several days then see if my phone will restart.

Then it seems like just everything little that could be happening today is happening. I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I should just go back to sleep. Ugh.

Random Thoughts

Ξ November 4th, 2007 | → 2 Comments | ∇ Life |

Ok, just randomness from me tonight, with no particular order of importance either.

*I really like working out when NO one else is in our community gym. It makes me happy to have the TV on whatever I want, and not have to worry if it is offending anyone or boring anyone and not have to watch pro wrestling, which is pretty much the ONLY thing that men in our community seem to watch while working out! UGH!
*It really annoys me when people lock me out of our community work out room. HEY! I pay the same bills you do for this place!
* Chance Clayville and Zaeda are pretty dang cute together- they even hug eachother so sweetly when they say goodbye.
* Transparency - not like overhead, but what everyone at our church has been talking about as of late, is SUPER hard for me. It is pretty scary, and I’m really trying to wrap my head and heart around it. Letting people know the real me. hrmm.
* I’m feeling a trip is in order pretty soon. I used to go to Idaho for awhile every summer, and it has been a goodwhile since I’ve been over that way. I think its time to head back over.
* Last week was quite stressful, including a trip to the mult. county courthouse for a (supposed to be, but actually wasnt) permanency hearing for our niece. It feels like Court dates keep getting pushed back and more added, its so crazy.
* I have a sudden urge to play hopscotch. Now if that isnt weird. I dont know what is.
